Meet the New Dad, Same as the Old Dad

Ted: I wonder if B’s old dad will be at his birthday party?
Me: What do you mean, “old dad”?
Ted: Well, R is his new dad now that his mom is married again.
Me: What? Wait. You know that R is B’s step-dad.
Ted: Yeah?
Me: B’s dad will always be his real dad—he’s not the old anything.
Ted: …
Me: If I got married again, say, to D, who would be your dad?
Ted: D?
Me: NO! Your dad will ALWAYS be your dad—even if I would marry ten guys!
Ted: Can I have noodles for dinner?

I guess sometimes I just forget the kid is only eight, and not exactly worldly.

thank god this conversation took place in the evening, at eight this morning you too might have been rendered speechless. isn't it funny to realize how things that are so obvious and old hat to us adults are like, "Wow! Really?" to our kids?

and at least you know carl won't be getting married again so you will never be referred to as "old mom" : )

The "old" Dad - Ouch. Kids say the funniest things. When we are trying to explain to my 6 year old that her sister has another Dad, we call him the Fresno Dad. The Dad here is the "Our Town" Dad. She gets a little confused too. She doesn't understand the concept of two Dads.
