Madeleine L'Engle is Dead

I am so, so sad. She was my very first favorite writer. A moment of silence, if you will.

Oh. Well, shit. I really liked her. And I swear, I came THIS CLOSE to re-reading A Wrinkle in Time last night after I finished Little Children. Spooky!

I'm going to read it tonight.

Damn. I just finished The Wind In The Door for the tiddly-omph time - I love that book. I love most of her stuff.

Her words will live for ever.

When I was about ten, I wrote her the only author fan letter I've ever written. AND SHE WROTE BACK, a short kind note. Sadly, I lost it in childhood moves. But I remember the thrill of it. I cried when I heard she'd died.

I met her once--I just wrote a bit about her on my blog. I'm glad someone else knows--I've emailed a few folks the NY obit but no one has responded--thank you Gina!

I was so sad to hear this news as well. Not only did I love her as a child, but got to share her with my daughter. I haven't had the heart to tell my daughter yet, though.

I told my son, and he was sad for me--but he won't read her books becuase they're about GIRLS. I swear, if Wrinkle started out with Calvin rather than Meg, he'd be all over them . . .

Boys!

Really? Well, damn. It's been a bad year for the greats of children's lit. Her and Lloyd Alexander, sheesh.
